6-Day Northern Frontier & Rift Valley Lakes: Samburu, Nakuru & Bogoria

6 Days 5 Nights

Journey to the edge of the arid north, then descend into the Great Rift’s lush basin. This 6-day adventure is a study in contrasts. You begin in the rugged, sun-baked plains of Samburu National Reserve, a landscape of red earth and doum palms that feels ancient and untouched. Here, you will hunt for the “Samburu Special Five”—rare species found nowhere else in Kenya. From the heat of the north, you descend into the Great Rift Valley to witness the birdwatcher’s paradise of Lake Nakuru and the geological drama of Lake Bogoria, where geysers shoot boiling water five meters into the air. This is not just a safari; it is an expedition through Kenya’s most dramatic geological and biological diverse zones.

Why This Safari is Unique

  • The “Special Five” Focus: Unlike standard safaris, this route targets the rare Northern species: the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, and Somali Ostrich. You won’t see these in the Mara.

  • Geological Wonders: We take you beyond the savannah to Lake Bogoria, where you can witness active geysers and hot springs—a raw display of the Rift Valley’s volcanic power.

  • Cultural Depth: The North is home to the Samburu people. Closely related to the Maasai but distinct in their colorful traditions, a visit here offers a less commercialized, deeply authentic cultural connection.

Your Day-by-Day Expedition Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu – Crossing the Equator Into the Northern Frontier. We depart Nairobi early, driving north through the lush coffee plantations of the central highlands. As we cross the Equator near Nanyuki, watch the landscape dramatically shift from green hills to the vast, arid scrubland of the North. We arrive in Samburu National Reserve in time for lunch. The heat here is drier, the light sharper. Your first game drive along the Ewaso Ng’iro River introduces you to huge herds of elephants digging in the dry riverbeds for water and Nile crocodiles basking on the banks.

  • Travel Time: Approx. 6 hours

  • Accommodation: (Lodge/Camp Name)

  • Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Full Day in Samburu – Land of the Special Five Survival of the fittest. Today is dedicated to finding the Samburu Special Five. Look for the Gerenuk (giraffe-gazelle) standing on its hind legs to eat iconic acacia leaves, and the Grevy’s Zebra with its fine, pinstripe markings. The predators here are hardened by the environment; lions, leopards, and cheetahs use the rocky outcrops (kopjes) as vantage points. In the afternoon, we facilitate a visit to a Samburu Village. Here, beneath the sacred mountains, you will learn how these pastoralists survive in this harsh environment, a stark contrast to the agricultural tribes of the south.

  • Activity: Morning & Afternoon Game Drives + Cultural Visit

  • Accommodation: (Lodge/Camp Name)

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Samburu to Lake Nakuru – The Pink Lake Descend the Escarpment. We leave the arid north and drive south, descending the walls of the Great Rift Valley. The temperature cools as we arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park. Famous for its birdlife, the lake shores are often lined with thousands of flamingos and pelicans. But the real prize here is the rhino. Nakuru is one of Kenya’s most successful sanctuaries for both Black and White Rhinos. Your afternoon game drive will likely spot them grazing near the fever trees, along with the endangered Rothschild giraffe.

  • Travel Time: Approx. 5.5 hours

  • Accommodation: (Lodge Name)

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Lake Bogoria – Geysers & Hot Springs Nature’s Kettle. After breakfast, we take a scenic drive to Lake Bogoria National Reserve. This saline lake is a geological marvel. You will walk near the lake’s edge to see steam vents and boiling geysers erupting from the earth—proof of the volcanic activity beneath your feet. The lake is also a major feeding ground for lesser flamingos, turning the water a brilliant pink. We enjoy a picnic lunch amidst this dramatic scenery before driving to Lake Naivasha for the evening.

  • Travel Time: Approx. 3 hours

  • Activity: Walking Safari at Hot Springs

  • Accommodation: (Lodge/Camp in Naivasha)

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Lake Naivasha to Nairobi – A Gentle Finish Walk with the wild. We wake up on the shores of Lake Naivasha, the highest lake in the Rift Valley. You have the option of a boat ride to spot hippos and fish eagles or a walking safari on Crescent Island, where you can walk safely among giraffes and zebras (no predators!). After a relaxed morning soaking in the fresh lake air, we ascend the escarpment one last time, returning to Nairobi in the late afternoon.

  • Travel Time: Approx. 2.5 hours

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How is Samburu different from the Maasai Mara? A: Samburu is much drier, hotter, and less crowded. While the Mara is famous for the Migration, Samburu is famous for unique species (The Special Five) that you cannot see in the Mara. The scenery is also more dramatic, with red earth and doum palm trees.

Q: Are the geysers at Lake Bogoria safe to visit? A: Yes, but caution is required. The water is boiling hot (close to 100°C). Your guide will ensure you stay on safe paths while allowing you to get close enough for incredible photos and to feel the steam.

Q: Is the drive to Samburu very long? A: It is about a 6-hour drive from Nairobi, but the road is paved and scenic, passing Mt. Kenya. We use comfortable 4×4 Land Cruisers to ensure the journey is smooth.

Q: What clothes should I pack for this trip? A: Pack layers. Samburu is very hot during the day but can be cool at night. Nakuru and Naivasha are at higher altitudes and can be chilly in the evenings, so a warm fleece or jacket is essential.
